Technology a priority: buy to exit recession, say big businesses

More than two thirds of businesses plan to wave goodbye to the downturn aboard a technology ski-lift.

That’s one of the main findings of a recent survey of 300 board-level executives in major UK organisations, conducted by leading research firm Vanson Bourne on behalf of BT Global Services.

They discovered that companies see faster computer networks, flexible working solutions and managed ICT services as their priority investments for 2010 and 2011 in order to cut costs and grow as they climb successfully away from the recession.

For 37% of those surveyed the key purchase will be faster and more reliable networks. This is particularly true in industries, such as financial services, where speed of information transfer and high efficiency are critical to gaining and maintaining a keen competitive edge.  And a third of the respondents are preparing for a future of more fluid working practices. They have plans to spend on equipping more of their employees to work at home and on the move, so cutting the need for and the cost of expensive city centre office accommodation.

The survey also found that not all market sectors share the same level of optimism about the speed of the recovery. Three quarters of leaders in the public sector say that they feel it will be slow – but only a third of those in the private sector agree with them. Out of all the industries, retailers appear to have the brightest outlook, with 70% saying that they are confident about their prospects this New Year.
